Cops find interstate drug mafia in Mangalore

The Mangalore police have arrested two alleged drug pedlars and seized high quality heroin worth Rs50,000 in the market.

Though the quantity of heroin haul was small, police claimed the hunt was the beginning of the end of a drug mafia based in a neighbouring state.

Inspector Thilakchandra of Pandeshwar police station said they had informed their counterparts in the neighbouring state. He did not name the state, but said investigators had identified the kingpin of the mafia.

Police identified the arrested duo as Suraj of Kulashekar and Gautham Chandra of Bikarnakatta — both in Mangalore. The accused persons were selling the banned substance to professional college students.

Thilakchandra said the police had informed a few colleges that drug pedlars had been their regular visitors.

The seized heroin was in the purest caught in recent years. Police said that it was sold at Rs1,000 a gram. Suraj and Gautam used to sell heroin worth Rs1.5 lakh a week, and the buyers used to shell out anywhere between Rs20,000 and Rs25,000 for their weekly ‘dose.’
