BANGALORE
Lessons in democratic, civic and environmental values are being imparted to schoolchildren.
Gauthami R may just be 13 years’ old, but she is aware of the social and environmental issues plaguing the country.
A student of Basavanagudi Girl’s Government High School, Gauthami takes the ‘Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA) hour’ quite seriously and is determined to do her bit to ensure that a cleaner and better future awaits the nation.
“Earlier, I used a lot of plastic. But when I learnt that plastic is non-biodegradable, I stopped using it. Now when I go to the market, I take a cloth bag with me to carry the items; I also discourage shopkeepers from giving wares to the customers in plastic covers,” says Gauthami.
“I also share with my parents what I learn at the school. For instance, I told them the importance of abiding by traffic rules and travelling with a ticket in buses. So in my own little way, I feel I am helping create a better society.”
And Gauthami is not alone. Tejaswini S, studying in Government Model Primary School, is another enthusiastic teenager who is concerned about the society and careful to put into practice what she learns at school. “People in my locality would often dump garbage in the middle of the road. After my lessons in the school regarding environment, I walked up to these people and asked them not to dirty the roads. Most of them refused to listen to me and asked me to mind my own business. But I am not discouraged. If they don’t listen, I pick up the garbage myself and put it in the dustbin,” she says.
Even though most of these students come from economically backward sections of the society, they have realised early in life the importance of keeping their surroundings clean, thanks to their education.
“A dirty neighbourhood can lead to illnesses,” Basavaraju N, another student of Government Model Primary School, says.
Nisarga N, studying in Government High School, Hebbal, is of the opinion that India should go the China way and ban plastic bags. Recently, during the Ganesha festival, she urged her neighbours and friends to go for eco-friendly Ganeshas.
The CMCA conducts hour-long classes once a week highlighting matters concerning the society in different schools. With the use of flashcards and charts, the students are made aware of their rights, duties and responsibilities. They are also taught to respect those who work for the society.
“We want to inculcate civic values in children. They appreciate these sessions because many of the issues and concepts are new to them,” says Vrunda Bhaskar, national coordinator, CMCA.
