Lack of details on BE/Btech seats on offer cited as reason; KEA, AICTE indulge in blame game
Dreams of nearly 71,000 aspiring engineers are in the doldrums. The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), in a last-minute decision on Wednesday, put off the counselling process for admission to undergraduate engineering and technical courses, earlier scheduled to start on Friday.
KEA officials cited the non-availability of details of the exact
number of seats available in the engineering colleges of the state as the reason for the postponement of counselling.
Declining to confirm when exactly the counselling process would commence, officials indicated that it might kickstart in the first week of July. They said the candidates would be informed of the fresh dates by SMS and announcements in newspapers.
The KEA officials said that counselling had to be postponed as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the governing body for engineering education in the country, had sought additional information about the existing engineering colleges in the state.
“The AICTE has not taken any decision regarding continuation of engineering colleges in the state, inclusion of courses, increase in the intake of students and other related issues. Admission details are not available for any engineering college in the state, so engineering counselling had to be postponed,” said KR Shashidhar, commissioner for public instruction.
“The intake of 167 engineering colleges in the state is close to 36,524 seats. The counselling is based on inputs given to us from government. We have not received any inputs from the officials till now,” the commissioner said. However, SS Mantha, the acting chairman of AICTE, told DNA that it is a fact that the final list of approved colleges would be out on June 30 every year. “We had informed all the states about the date of declaration of the list of approved colleges in the month of January. The first list of approved colleges had already been prepared and was even put on our website. During the second round, the colleges with any kind of deficits would undergo quality checks. We plan to finish the process as early as possible,” said Mantha.
However, DNA failed to find the first list of approved colleges on the AICTE website. Asked why the schedule was not drawn up after consulting AICTE, KEA officials said there was a communication gap. “We were not aware about the approval process. The KEA receives inputs about the intake of various engineering colleges from the state higher education department.
This is the first time that the entire process has been delayed. Counselling might restart in the first week of July,” said a KEA official. The AICTE council had brought in new reforms in its accreditation policy recently. “The approval for existing institutions is based on self declaration of criteria like facilities, labs and infrastructure. For new institutes, an expert team visits the campus and makes reports,” Mantha said.
KN Balasubramanya Murthy, director, PES Institute of Technology, said the AICTE was at a fault. The governing body was conducting such a huge verifying exercise of infrastructure at engineering colleges for the first time, but had failed to update the colleges on what they had to do. The faulty website of AICTE and the governing body’s unrealistic norms were also to blame, he added.
