The central empowered committee (CEC) headed by PV Jayakrishnan on Monday questioned the chief secretary and other officials for lapses in controlling illegal mining activities in the state.
After visiting mining areas in Bellary, Sandur, Hospet and Ramgadh and collecting information from locals and officers on Monday, the CEC team held meetings with chief secretary SV Ranganath and other senior officials of mines and minerals, forest and environment department and pulled up the state government for not providing complete details on illegal mining activities in the state. State officials failed to provide convincing answers to several questions raised by the CEC members.
The meeting lasted for over half an hour. CEC sought details and follow-up action taken on the Lokayukta report that found 1081.40 hectares of forest area encroached in the Bellary-Hospet-Sandur region by various mining lease holders.
The committee examined illegal mining activities in the forest areas, mining beyond leased land and flouting of environment, forest rules issues and collected maximum information from officials and locals during their four-day state visit. The committee is likely to submit detailed report on illegal mining activities to the Supreme Court by April 20.
The CEC arrived in the city on Friday and met chief secretary and Lokayuta justice N Santosh Hegde. On Saturday and Sunday, the team visited various sites of Bellary district. They left the city on Monday evening.
Following a writ petition filed by SV Hiremath of Samudaya Parivartana Samaj, the Supreme Court had asked the CEC to submit a report on illegal mining in Karnataka within six weeks.
