Important documents, computers and almirahs destroyed.
An accidental fire broke out at the BSNL office situated in Cubbon Park, behind the GPO, resulting in many important documents getting burnt on Thursday morning. Fire officials said the a short circuit in the building triggered the fire and that the security guard of the building came to know about the incident almost one hour after the fire broke out.
Even after the guard found smoke bellowing out of the third floor of the building about 4.30am, he did not inform the fire control room as he did not know the number to dial.
Finally, with the help of a passerby, the guard managed to call the 101 helpline number about 6.15am and intimated the fire department officials about the incident.
The fire and emergency personnel rushed to the scene and managed to douse the fire with seven fire tenders. The officials said they took about 15 minutes just to brake open the door of the building to enter the room that was gutted.
Important documents along with five computers, records racks and six almirahs were gutted in the fire, they added. The Cubbon Park police also rushed to the scene after they came to know about the incident. District fire officer (DFO) Sannamarappa and regional fire officer (RFO) KU Ramesh were part of the operation team. The team found that the building had a defective smoke detector.
