Ganesh Mandir corporator, L Govindaraju, who was caught red handed by Lokayukta in July while accepting a bribe of Rs2 lakh from contractor J Uday Kumar, was suspended from Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), on Wednesday.
The Karnataka Urban Development ordered the suspension on the basis of The Karnataka Government (Transaction of Business) Rules 1977.
Govindaraju had demanded a bribe of Rs8 lakh from Kumar, who was constructing a building in Banashankari. Kumar lodged a complaint with the Lokayukta, following which Govindaraju was trapped at his residence.
Govindaraju became a corporator outwitting BJP candidate AH Basavaraju, a close aide of transport minister R Ashoka. Once found guilty, a re-election will be held in the ward within six months. Sources said that Ashoka forced Govindaraju’s suspension as Basavaraju had a good chance of becoming the mayor.
“But BJP MLA Y Sampangi got a clean chit even after being caught by the Lokayukta,” said the source. Opposition leader in the BBMP M Nagaraj has vowed to fight against the government’s double standards.
