More than 30 job aspirants were surprised when the police bundled their prospective employer into a vehicle and sped away on Monday.
A few hours earlier, a Hewlett-Packard (HP) employee too was surprised to see job offers by his company being sold on city roads.
The man who sold job offers – all fake – was put behind bars on charges of cheating. Identifying the man as Kannaiah Naidu, 21, police said he would be produced before the additional chief metropolitan magistrate court on Tuesday.
Naidu, a native of Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, had reached the city two weeks ago and started selling jobs to those aspiring to be software engineers. Besides HP, Naidu also ‘offered’ jobs in IBM and other firms.
The conman ran out of luck when an HP employee found him selling jobs. The staffer immediately informed his company.
The Koramangala police they received a complaint from Rahul Nandi, group manager (staffing) of HP. The police soon launched a search for the conman.
When the police found him, Naidu was sitting near the JNC College, surrounded by more than 30 job aspirants. He was busy handing over job offers printed on fake letter heads to his customers.
The offer letters mentioned that the candidate had been selected for an unspecified post, police said, adding that he charged Rs700 to Rs800 for each letter, which had no mention of the salary offered.
When questioned, Naidu’s prospective customers said they had been orally offered a lucrative package. The conman also told them that he would train them for a month, after which they would be given confirmation on the job.
Police said Naidu had so far cheated about 50 people, and 100 others were to collect the “offer letters” from him on Tuesday.
“Naidu had come down with his friends and started this business. The candidates are mostly from Andhra Pradesh, looking for jobs in the city. He told us that he normally found them near bus stops, colleges and software companies,” deputy commissioner of police (south-east) BNS Reddy said.
More than 100 fake offer letters, identity and visiting cards were seized from Naidu.
