BANGALORE
Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa did not allocate funds in the state budget for dividing the varsity into three, despite higher education minister Aravind Limbavali favouring the division.
The Bangalore University will not be trifurcated this year due to lack of funds, sources in the department of higher education said on Friday.
The department decided to shelve the trifurcation plan for a year since chief minister BS Yeddyurappa had not allocated funds for it, nor mentioned the issue in the state budget presented on March 5.
“We need more money to trifurcate the university. However, the state budget had not allocated funds for this purpose, and hence we decided to stop it for now,” a higher education department official said. The department decided to trifurcate the university to overcome the logistical problem of having too many colleges - about 600 - affiliated to the varsity, and also to ensure better management of its affairs.
The Bangalore University was bifurcated three years ago to form the Tumkur varsity. Even after the bifurcation, the varsity experienced delays in conducting examinations and announcing results.
The committee headed by former vice-chancellor of the Gulbarga University N Rudrappa, constituted on December 29 last year, recommended that the university should be divided into three: Bangalore North, Bangalore South and Bangalore Central Universities.
Higher education minister Aravind Limbavali has been favouring the division of the university, sources close to him said.
The Rudrappa committee had recommended that the 598 affiliated colleges should be distributed among the three new varsities based on zones. It also recommended the acquisition of five to 10 acres from the old Central Jail premises, besides acquiring the Cauvery and BMC guest houses along with 20 acres from the race course.
The zones:
