The Bangalore police have issued directives to discourage drivers from fleeing from the spot after their vehicle injures someone in an accident.
Police commissioner BG Jyothi Prakash Mirji has directed cab owners to inform the police if their vehicle is responsible for an accident. The directive aims to curb the practice where drivers flee after an accident, fearing police action. Sometimes, the life of the accident victim can be saved if they provide immediate medical attention. The police said instances of hit-and-run often lead to death of the injured. To deter erring drivers from escaping, the police have told cab owners that if they learn that their vehicle has been involved in an accident, they should inform the police. If the owners fail to comply, they too will be arrested along with the driver.
Likewise, the police have directed all garage owners to inform them when a vehicle comes in for repair after an accident.
Mirji said the police could book the owner of the vehicle and the garage owner if they failed to report the accident and the vehicle is later detected as being responsible.
Mirji said, after accident, the driver should stop the vehicle and shift the injured person to a hospital as it can save the victim’s life. He said the driver also has to inform the police about the accident.
