Bangalore observes National Consumer Day

National Consumer Day was observed on Friday, reminding each individual that protecting consumers’ interests is one of the most important activities for the government. This helps ensure accountability and efficiency for both the government and the corporate sector.

More than 70% of population in India falls under the age group of 35 years. The government of India has asked the department of consumer affairs, ministry of consumer affairs and food and public distribution to involve young students in spreading the message about consumer awareness and redressal mechanism.

“Each one is a consumer. Even the provider is a consumer in one sector or the other. Upholding their rights and being aware of one’s rights is  important. Consumer clubs were established in 1150 schools across the state this year and we are yet to establish more such clubs in 884 schools,” said Harish Gowda, government secretary to food and public distribution.

The awareness about consumer courts and other consumer forums have improved of late. Complaints against every department, including BSNL, India Post and other service providers were addressed by the department, said Justice K Ramanna.

He said, “We received about 33,053 appeals and 4,023 complaints this year. If there is a defect, the providers can be held responsible.”

However, he expressed his unhappiness over the government not releasing funds for the department this year.
