Hundreds of Ganesha idols and thousands of people were out in the open on Sunday evening, transforming the city streets into a riot of colour.
Yediyur, Saneguruvanahalli and Hebbal lakes and Sankey tank were readied with separate areas for Ganesha idols immersions. With nearly 25 other immersion spaces, BBMP had made arrangements for peaceful and easy immersion of idols.
Many devotees made arrangements to distribute prasadam to public. “Ganesha’s favourite food is considered to be Modaka and Kadabu. Some devotees gave boiled chickpeas with coconut as prasadam to people,” said Shyam Sundar, a resident of Shivajinagar.
From small palm-sized idols to the ones over 20 feet high, hundreds of Ganesha idols were decorated with flowers and colour to be immersed. During the mass Ganesha immersion procession, Tannery Road, Commercial Street and Shivajinagar were packed with devotees with no space for vehicles to move.
“The place was packed with colour and music. Roads were flooded with people dancing and screaming out slogans like ‘Ganesha Bappa Moria’ and ‘Jai Ganesha’. Some of them were even throwing colours at each other,” said Veena Mallikarjuna.
Although most places were filled with fun and frolic, many felt the pinch as their plans for shopping on a peaceful Sunday were spoiled. “We were stranded in Commercial Street for over half an hour. There was no place to park our vehicle. There was too much noise and the heat was also very high. We could not do any shopping. With too many policemen asking us to move, we simply came back home without doing any shopping,” said Anita Prabhuswamy.
The Bangalore city police deputed 1,500 policemen along with City Armed Reserve (CAR) and Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) platoons. Videographers were deputed at sensitive areas to record processions. They were in plain clothes to help identify trouble makers during the procession.
The rules laid out by the police commissioner prior to the procession were not followed as thronging devotees brought traffic to a grinding halt in many areas, especially near Ulsoor lake.
Policemen seemed to have enjoyed the blaring music played in vehicles and the sound of crackers.
