Just within a week of starting a Twitter account to keep his ears on the ground, new commissioner of the city corporation, MK Shankarlinge Gowda, has got more than 24 tweets from Bangaloreans; as promised, he is replying to each one of them.

The BBMP commissioner (@bbmpcommr) wrote in his first tweet last week that his priority is to rid Bangalore of its garbage. He had asked residents to inform him about “blackspots and dumps” in their area. He checks the Twitter account regularly and is answering to Bangaloreans’ tweets, his answers interspersed with wit.

A Twitter user, @Lakshmiratan, wrote: “am sure citizens tweets are full of garbage ..don’t throw them into the dusbin, Sir! Why dont u send a squad all over to chk?” To this, Gowda replied: “No dustbin for tweets.we will attend”. Another user, @bhakriv, wrote: “glad that ur available for public.something the bbmp has to with 3500 m.t of garbage”.

Gowda has replied that the amount of garbage Bangalore generates every day has increased to 4,000 tonnes now. Another user, @sickmaduck, has written: “Appreciate your intent to clean Bangalore. Are you aware of children employed to collect garbage?” The BBMP commissioner is indeed aware of this. He replied: “Yes. they are engaged by NGOs who pay them. Otherwise they will remain ragpickers.”

Gowda has earlier served as secretary, department of information technology, biotechnology and science & technology. Being tech savvy, he has taken to the popular social networking website to get closer to people to know their problems. Bangaloreans, too, who are fed up with calling the BBMP control room several times, but to no avail, have expressed happiness that the chief of the city corporation is just a click away.

While meeting him online is now a non-issue, tweeple are using the medium to ask him to be available for them in person too. One Twitter user, @bharathcampion, requested Gowda to be available in the head office every day at least from 3pm to 5pm. To this, Gowda replied he would be in the office if he does not have to attend an inspection.

Gowda has confirmed that all complaints of people would be attended to without fail. Although he has taken up the issue of garbage for the time being, people are writing to him about problems regarding other issues, such as drinking water, too. His Twitter account already has 480 followers.
