Aadhaar cards would be linked to the Anna Bhagya scheme to ensure that only people below poverty line get access to the subsidised rice distributed by the Karnataka government, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) chairman Nandan Nilekani said on Sunday.

Delivering the Sir M Visvesvaraya Memorial Lecture on the Founder’s Day celebration at Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), Nilekani said: “Linking the Aadhaar cards with the Anna Bhagya scheme will ensure that only genuine people get the rice which is distributed at Re1 per kg by the government.”

He said the entire population of Karnataka would be given Aadhaar cards by March 31 next year. Currently, only 50% of the state’s population was in possession of the cards. Nilekani said that by the end of 2014, 120 crore people will have Aadhaar cards nationwide.

“Three years after we started generating the Aadhaar numbers, 40 crore people have the cards as of today in the country. By the end of 2014, one out of every two Indians will have an Aadhaar card,” he added.
