Sixteen people, including four women, were killed and eight others injured when a speeding Tempo Trax collided with a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus at Heggare village on Gubbi Road (Tumkur-Pune highway) on Monday.

Tumkur district superintendent of police TR Suresh said the Trax, while overtaking an autorickshaw, collided head-on with the Shimoga-bound bus near Siddartha Dental College in Tumkur around 12.15 pm, killing 15 instantly. One man, Mohideen Khasim Sab, died while being shifted to hospital.

The deceased were all travelling in the Trax. Of those injured, two were in a critical state.

Suresh said more than 20 people were in the Trax, which has a maximum seating capacity of 12. 

Police shifted the bodies to the Tumkur district government hospital and Siddartha Medical College for post-mortem. One of the deceased was yet to be identified.

The injured persons have been admitted to two different hospitals in Tumkur.

Bus driver Ningaraj, 38, of Jog in Shimoga, was among those injured, police said.

The Tempo Trax belonged to Tumkur resident Raghavendra. Police said that they had not yet been able to locate the owner of the vehicle.
