Vibrant Gujarat Summit: Suzuki begins second assembly unit in Gujarat

It has a capacity to produce 2.5 lakh units per annum

Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG), began production at its second assembly line at Hansalpur in Gujarat, said a statement from Suzuki Motor Corporation on Friday. It has a capacity to produce 2.5 lakh units per annum. With this, the company will be able to produce five lakh units from the Gujarat facility. The third assembly line is likely to be commissioned in 2020.

The second assembly line will produce Swift cars. It will also manufacture 2.5 lakh units of 1.2-litre petrol engine and 1.6 lakh units of a five-speed manual transmission (5MT) and Auto Gear Shift (AGS) power plants. The first assembly line has been producing Baleno and Swift models.

The announcement came soon after Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation said at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in Gandhinagar that production at the second assembly line will start shortly, while the third line will begin production in 2020. After all the three lines start functioning, the company will be able to produce 7.5 lakh cars annually from Hansalpur facility.

"Suzuki is making investments in Gujarat on a continuous basis...Also, it's my pleasure to share with you that an engine and transmission plant is starting production shortly, which enables us to bear the fruit of integrated vehicle manufacturing in Gujarat. Gujarat is becoming more and more important as a production site for Suzuki group," said Suzuki. He also informed that manufacturing plant of an automobile lithium-ion battery is under construction in Hansalpur. In addition to the lithium-ion battery, the company will localise other components required for vehicle electrification. "Since the technologies for hybrid and electric vehicles have similarity, we will first localise components of the hybrid vehicle and followed by an electric vehicle," he said.
