Tata Motors’ Nano, the cheapest car launched in a decade, is likely to go out of market as dealers in most parts of the country have stopped placing orders for the cars in the last three-four months.

According to a report in the Business Standard, the daily production of the car has come down to just two at the Tata’s Sanand plant and the monthly sales volume was down to double digits in October.

The report says that Tata Motors dispatched 180 Nanos to its 630 sales outlets this August, 124 units in September and just 57 units in October.

At present, Nano is sold at a price band of Rs 2.25 lakh to Rs 3.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

It is likely that Nano is shelved completely after introduction of its electric version next week.

Tata Motors is going to launch the Tata Nano in an electric avatar on November 28 with the moniker Jayem Neo. The electric version Nano will be jointly manufactured by Tata Motors and Coimbatore-based Jayen Automotives.

The car, a pet project of Ratan Tata, then chairman of the group, was launched with much fanfare in 2009 and its cheapest model was priced at little over Rs 1 lakh back then.

Nano was one of the major issues that cropped during accusations and counter-accusations following the ouster of Cyrus Mistry as Tata Group’s Chairman.

Mistry had cited mounting losses from it — cumulatively valued at Rs 6,400 crore — to be the key reason for the poor financial performance of Tata Motors’ domestic operations.
