DNA Special: Captain Amarinder Singh checkmates Congress

A meeting took place this evening between former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah. The meeting between 79-year-old Amarinder Singh and 56-year-old Amit Shah lasted 50 minutes. A meeting of 50 minutes in politics cannot be called a normal meeting at all. In T20 cricket, a team plays half the overs of its innings in such a time and it becomes easy for both the teams to predict which way the match may go and the same has happened from this meeting.

There is political speculation that Amarinder Singh may join the BJP and become the chief ministerial face in Punjab's assembly elections, but the real strategy goes much further. If Amarinder Singh joins BJP or becomes a minister in the central government, or becomes the BJP's chief ministerial face, then he too will look like a leader, desperate to get power, like Navjot Singh Sidhu.

That's why the BJP wants that Amarinder Singh's image should first be made as to the strongest representative of the farmers of Punjab. And then he should be made to mediate in talks with the farmers. And perhaps that is why in this meeting, Captain Amarinder Singh and Amit Shah had a long discussion on the issue of farmers' movement, minimum support price for crops and farmers.

The farmers' movement was started in August last year from Punjab itself and these farmers are also tired of the movement but due to the selfishness of leaders like Rakesh Tikait, the farmers are not getting a way out of this movement. If Amarinder Singh talks to the farmers, then perhaps farmers can also think of withdrawing the agitation.

Captain Amarinder Singh comes from the Jat Sikh community, which accounts for 14 to 18 per cent of the total population in Punjab. Most of the landowner farmers in Punjab also come from this community and these farmers of Punjab have the most role in the movement. Therefore, Captain Amarinder Singh can be quite fit in this role.

In the 2017 Legislative Assembly elections, he single-handedly led the Congress to victory in 77 out of 117 seats in Punjab. That is, he had won about 65 per cent of the seats in Punjab alone. Whereas both BJP and Akali Dal together could win only 18 seats. And the Aam Aadmi Party won 20 seats.

However, in 2017 Captain Amarinder Singh was 74 years old and now he is 79 years old. That's why some people are giving the theory that they now have three options.

First, h joins BJP and BJP will fight Punjab elections under his leadership. Second, he forms his own regional party in Punjab and after the election, BJP supports this party or make an alliance before the election. And the third, Captain joins BJP, and BJP makes him a minister at the centre. For example, the agriculture minister.

But as we told you, BJP will not be in any hurry in this matter. First, Amarinder Singh's image will be improved. He will be tasked to mediate between farmers and the government and then a decision will be taken on him joining BJP.

Overall, 79-years-old Amarinder Singh is playing a test match of politics. Whereas 57-year-old Navjot Singh Sidhu feels that he has taken the wicket of Captain Amarinder Singh as soon as he arrived in the T20 style. While the Gandhi family was thinking that it had taken the wicket of both in one ball. But in reality, if the wicket of any of them has fallen, then it is the Gandhi family. Because after this development, the hold of the Gandhi family on the Congress has weakened further.
