A story about fate, love & follies of youth.
Book: The Dream Chasers
Author: Vipul Mittra
Publisher: Random House India
Pages: 284 Pages
Price: Rs 199
The Dream Chasers is the story of a group of six friends – Viraat, Sandy, Karan, Mallika, Preeto and Vandana – who are pursuing MBA. The friends are united by their carefree camaraderie and unbothered by lecturing professors or sermonising parents. When on their own, the boys are a wild, reckless bunch. But when their common love Mallika is in their midst, they instantly become arch rivals, and use all sorts of plays and resources to woo her.
The book is the story of youthful dreams and optimism, yet unbridled by reality. It explores the dreams of each one in the gang, as they breeze through the semesters and go on to do their summer internships, and finally look for job placements. Once the friends begin to embark on their individual journeys, their youthful dreams start to lose much of their sheen.
The protagonist in the book is Viraat, a tall, sharp and slightly aloof youth, but the story is as much about him as it is about his friends.
The gang, that was once inseparable, disintegrates as the course ends. As his friends move on and take up jobs, Viraat finds himself alone with no job and no love. What is more, he is not even sure of his dreams now.
At the crossroad of his young life, Viraat is forced to make tough choices. Bitter about his shattered dreams, he sees the futility of his fantasies, and decides that he would much rather be his own master.
He also chooses not to get distracted by romance and focuses instead of stabilising his life. When the gang reunites briefly a year after leaving college, other friends have had to make compromises too and discard those dreams that are not worth chasing.
The Dream Chasers is the story of student life, but it strikes a chord in every person who has once been young. The narration reveals the insecurities and angst that lurk behind the modern-day carefree youth through the dreams they pursue and the paths they choose. It is a story about fate, love and follies of youth.
The Dream Chasers is the second book by Gujarat cadre IAS officer Vipul Mittra.
