Well done, Saina
Teen badminton sensation, Saina Nehwal, continues to do the country proud after she convincingly clinched the Singapore Super Series title. This latest victory may propel her to the world no 2 spot. Saina appears to go about her work in a most admirable manner. Her praiseworthy work ethic and unwavering focus has seen her scale great heights at such a tender age.

Adoption woes
The struggle of Daksha van Dijck, the Indian born citizen of Netherlands in trying to find her biological parents after 34 years is appreciated, but what one fails to understand is that in her search efforts she is blaming the orphanage and has lodged a police complaint against them (‘In search of roots, Dutch woman smells a racket’, DNA, June 17). It is a fact that orphanages in India don’t have an elaborate office system unlike western countries where records are computerised and retained. Moreover to expect an orphanage to maintain records of over 34 years back is too much, especially in India. It is her good luck that even if she was kidnapped she has landed up in an affluent family which she would have definitely not enjoyed as a kidnapped child.

Face value
In Australia, a Muslim female job aspirant, when asked to remove her veil at the time of interview, refused to do so, and filed an official complaint (‘Oz woman told to remove veil during interview’, DNA, June 22). It is preposterous to lodge a complaint in the matter. Should the employers not have all the details, including the photograph of the applicant, in their records? Should they run the risk of anybody wearing a burkha being allowed to enter without proper identification; the only dependable source for which is an authenticated snap showing the face of the person seeking access?

Catching mosquitoes
This is with reference to ‘Spread your mosquito nets, the malaria menace is back in Mumbai’ (DNA, June 22). A mosquito-catching contest was recently held in Estonia. The BMC should conduct such competitions so that it can contain to a great extent the mosquito menace, which becomes unbearable with the onset of monsoon. Since civic employees have the unenviable expertise in counting the thousands of potholes that appear on the roads year after year, who else will be better equipped to catch and kill the mosquitoes as well? Mosquito-borne diseases could be checked to a large extent if the BMC conduct this novel contest.
