Troubled times
The perennially troubled nation of Kyrgyzstan is in the throes of yet another major crisis (‘78 Indians evacuated safely from Kyrgyzstan’s Osh city’, DNA, June 14). The smouldering city of Osh has been witness to despicable, unspeakable crimes perpetrated by the Kyrgyz on the hapless Uzbek minority populace. Those responsible for instigating this violence ought to be brought to book swiftly. However, with an unstable government in power, it remains to be seen whether the Kyrgyz are able to tide over the wave of political volatility. The international community ought to extend its whole-hearted support to the Kyrgyz government and Uzbeks at this juncture.

Passing the buck
Our chances of getting Warren Anderson extradited now look bleak. As for ‘re-looking’ into the concerned issues, it appears a foregone conclusion that the GOM will be looking to save the involved ministers so that they could rest in peace. The most helpful gesture from the Centre in the circumstances should be to offer substantially raised compensation to those affected and ensure that it reaches only the rightfully deserving.

Government’s lapse
There has been a cacophony of protests from the sycophants of the first family against the Opposition allegation that it was Rajiv Gandhi who let Warren Anderson escape after the Bhopal gas tragedy. The latest to jump on to this bandwagon is Arun Nehru, a one-time crony of the former prime minister (‘Arjun Singh, not Rajiv, decided Anderson release: Arun Nehru’, DNA, June 14). After a lot of pussy-footing the Congress high command has also ordered Pranab Mukherjee, Congress’ permanent trouble-shooter, to put the blame squarely on Arjun Singh, claiming that Rajiv Gandhi did not know anything about Anderson’s release. Do these people assume that we are all idiots to believe that a chief minister would have taken such a decision with legal and international ramifications without the explicit consent of the prime minister?
