Serve as an example
I am in total agreement with your views on HL Gokhale-KG Balakrishnan row over A Raja, who was trying to influence Justice Reghupathy of Madras HC (‘The Raja row taints the judiciary’, DNA, December 16). When the former CJI was asked for his reaction to Justice Gokhale’s claim that A Raja’s name was mentioned in Reghupathy’s letter, Balakrishnan was found fumbling for words, which clearly shows that he was trying to conceal something. Balakrishnan’s conduct should have been impeccable to serve as an example for others in the judiciary.

For the girl child
It was heartening to learn that the zilla parishad officials of Satara are trying to stop the practice of naming an unwanted girl child as ‘Nakusa’ or ‘Dagadi’ or ‘Dhondi’, a despicable practice prevalent among the villagers who have a preference for a male child (‘Satara decides Nakusa is an unwanted name’, DNA, December 19). This practice is worse than female foeticide because the girl spends all her life carrying a name indicative of her being rejected by her own family. I suggest that the 222 identified Nakusas are renamed ‘Bhagyashri’ by the zilla parishad officials.

Do your duty
This is with reference to ‘BJP as target, Cong launches attack on RSS’, (DNA, December 20) and the edit ‘Rahul is playing the old divisive game’, (DNA, December 20). Speeches by the Congress leaders at the party’s 83rd plenary session near New Delhi show that the party has not learnt any lesson from its humiliating electoral defeat in Gujarat and Bihar where its politics of sloganeering on secularism and launching scathing attacks on the BJP and RSS just didn’t work. As matters stand today, people are more concerned about the price of onions than Babri demolition, Gujarat riots, secularism or so-called ‘Hindu terror’. Rahul Gandhi’s view that ‘Hindu terror’ was bigger threat for the country than Lashkar-e-Taiba puts the party in the dock on the issue of terrorism. A country being looted by the corrupt politicians and bled by cross-border terrorism cannot be convinced by the party’s rhetoric but by real and fruitful action by the government to bring the guilty to justice.
