One fails to understand the fuss created by the Congressmen about the integrity of the prime minister
Meaningless offer
One fails to understand the fuss created by the Congressmen about the integrity of the prime minister (‘Nothing to hide, says PM; ready to face PAC’, DNA, December 21). No one doubts that. But at the same time, the opposition is justified in demanding an explanation for why the PM did not take any action against A Raja for nearly two years when he knew for certain that there were irregularities in the allocation of 2G spectrum licenses. He even refused to make a statement about the scam until the Supreme Court passed strictures against his silence. His offer to face the PAC does not mean anything.

So, at last the PM spoke at the 83rd Congress plenary session, breaking his long silence on various scams and also offered to present himself to the PAC for questioning, if so desired. Well done sir. But who doubts your integrity? No one. The general complaint against you, PM, is that of inaction and dithering in the 2G and CWG scams. While it was nice of you to accept that you might have made some mistakes, the whole exercise of speaking in front of the delegates instead of making a statement in the Parliament has not gone down too well with the aam aadmi. It would have brought you more laurels if you had not tried to save your government and asked A Raja to resign as soon as the controversy began. It would certainly have enhanced your stature in the eyes of every Indian.

Harsh criticism
The edit ‘Irate Bharadwaj violates the code’ (DNA, December 20) is unnecessarily harsh in critisising the Karnataka governor HR Bharadwaj for ‘violating Constitutional decorum’. Under Section 166(3) of the Constitution, the governor is required ‘to make rules for the more convenient transaction of the business of the government of the state…’ According to these rules of business, ‘The chief minister shall cause to be furnished to the governor such information relating to the administration of the affairs of the State ….. as the governor may call for ….’ The onus of maintaining confidentiality in such matters, as per the rules, lies with the chief minister and not with the governor. Incidentally, these rules were framed some 50 years ago.
