Is it justice?

Maybe it was his sympathy for the Maoists that influenced judge VP Varma to pass this verdict. Has the learned judge, through Dr Sen’s judgment, sent a warning to other human activists?

Is it justice?
When the BJP-led Chhattisgarh government charged a person like Dr Binayak Sen of sedition and conspiring to wage war against the state, surely with strong evidence, then we have also witnessed how Sen’s lawyer failed to counter the prosecution charges and to convince the court that he is being victimised (‘Sen verdict will not end controversy’, DNA, December 27). It reminded me of my visit, more than a decade ago, to Jagdalpur, Kanker and other places, where I had felt respect, love, and affection towards Dr Sen. Maybe it was his sympathy for the Maoists that influenced judge VP Varma to pass this verdict. Has the learned judge, through Dr Sen’s judgment, sent a warning to other human activists?

Path to honesty
Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has given instructions to his ministers that all of them are now required to declare their assets, bank balances, their investments as well as that of their dependents, close relatives, and so on (‘In clean-up mode, Prithviraj Chavan issues dos and don’ts for mantris’, DNA, December 25). He has also instructed them not to accept gifts or favours from any people or establishments.

This move by Chavan seems to be a lesson from the Adarsh housing society scam. I hope that all ministers will comply with his instructions. But it would be appreciated if Chavan appoints a committee to look into the veracity of their claims.  This committee must also come out with a report within a month and publish the same for the public.

Space setback
Yet again the failure of the GSLV mission on Christmas Day is a great setback to our ambitious space programme and would affect our credibility to launch satellites on a commercial basis (‘ISRO’s Christmas show falls to pieces’, DNA.Sunday, December 26). Malfunctioning of the strap-on boosters is quite rare and it may have even been sabotage — if there had been no oversight. Stalwarts like G Madhavan Nair, who had successfully led India’s foray into outer space, should be recalled to steer the Indian space programme.
