ANALYSIS
The US’s engagement in Pakistan is a long drawn affair and pulling troops from Afghanistan by next July will make the borders more dangerous.
India’s security
The edit ‘Obama’s wars may leave India worse off’, (DNA, September 24) rightly cautions India about the pitfalls of the backlash of US policies in Pakistan. Obama’s policy of hunting with the hunters and running with the hares may not bring the desired results because the threads of terror in Pakistan have spread far and wide. The US’s engagement in Pakistan is a long drawn affair and pulling troops from Afghanistan by next July will make the borders more dangerous. We have to make our surveillance and security stronger. India simply cannot be oblivious to the growing dangers to its stability posed by its volatile neighbours and their malafide intentions.

Ground realities of CWG
It is heartening to note that the prime minister has finally cracked the whip and saved the games and the name of the country which was also at stake to justify the ‘World Statesman’ award that has been conferred on him(‘C’wealth is back in the game’, DNA, September 25). The international members associated with the CWG who have politely asked the media to stop its criticism, pointing out that such last minute hiccups are always a part of any such international event should also be lauded. The people who were given charge of the Games should have been more responsible especially when deficiencies have been pointed out right from the beginning. It is their refusal to see the ground realities that have brought the Games to this state.

Not the end
Sidelining Suresh Kalmadi is a welcome step (‘Operation Salvage CWG: PM holds emergency meet, leaves out Kalmadi’, DNA, September 24). But the PM shouldn’t relax, since this is not the end but a beginning to cleanse the rot that has pervaded OC. The steps to be taken are — file criminal cases against those responsible for the wealth amassed, identify all those who are the beneficiaries of the loot. When a project like the CWG is taken up there must be a blueprint clearly specifying the targets and who is accountable to what, otherwise the outcome will result in a fiasco and the results are there to be seen by one and all.
