The GoM has not answered how former Carbide chief Warren Anderson is to be extradited and why safe passage was given to him in 1984.
Getting murkier
Apropos ‘Rip Van Winkle act’ (DNA, June 23), the GoM has recommended enhanced amount of Rs1500 crore for relief to Bhopal gas victims. It has suggested that the cleaning up of the toxic waste at the Carbide site be done by the Madhya Pradesh government. But the GoM has not answered how former Carbide chief Warren Anderson is to be extradited and why safe passage was given to him in 1984. The Congress party president should explain how Anderson got away.

Right suggestion
In ‘Pay up now for past and future sins’, (DNA, June 22), the writer has quite rightly advocated collecting ‘guilt money’ from big corporations in advance to make sure that they do not get away with the mess that they invariably create. Such security deposits to take care of any eventuality are normally collected even in educational institutions as a matter of procedure and one wonders why this was not followed in the case of UCIL. If only this had been done, it would not have been necessary for the Group of Ministers to go on a wild goose chase for the clean-up expenditure.

Super Saina
Saina Nehwal’s tryst with glory continues even as she has won the Singapore Open Series title (‘Encore! Saina gains another ‘super’ title’, DNA, June 21). A year ago, the ace shuttler had clinched the Indonesian Super Series and that win was a pointer of things to come. Subsequent events have reinforced the faith we reposed in India’s number one women’s badminton player. That she defeated World number one, Lan Lu, in Singapore, was the icing on the cake. But the real test for Saina will not be her performance in the Asian or Commonwealth games as is made out to be. She has to win the All-England title for India now. Her coach, Gopichand, was the second man to do so for the country. Will Saina Nehwal follow in her mentor’s footsteps?

Media overboard
In ‘Media’s low credibility’, (DNA, June 22) the writer has rightly pointed out the anomalies with regard to free and fair reporting by the media, be it print or electronic. Over the past decade the media has been partial to such an extent that many acts of crime committed by big politicians and industrialists or top government servants have been brushed aside as soon as they have come to light. Also the biased media seemed to go overboard in putting religious connotations to the perceived act of terror committed by the majority community while those acts committed by the minority community are given a secular overtone.
