This is with reference to ‘Publicise maintenance tribunals’ (DNA, December 24).The court’s move to give publicity about the constitution of maintenance tribunals and appellate tribunals under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 is a good move. It is almost three years since this statute has come into force. Nevertheless the effect has not percolated down to the people, except amongst a few educated! Since the majority of those who need this are not literate, the best way to propagate the rights of the senior citizens will be by word of mouth. And in this regard media can play a vital role to popularise the concept.

No reservation
A court has rightly rejected the demand for reservation by the Gujjars (‘High court denies job quota to Gujjars’, DNA, December 23). Strangely, in spite of the court’s decision, the Gujjar’s so-called peaceful protests continue. Why are the authorities not taking any action? Vote-bank politics must end. Harsher measures are a must for those who violate the law and harass the common man and who pretend to be champions of a section of society. The best course of action is to delete the word ‘reservation’ from the Constitution through a suitable amendment. Quotas are politicians’ tool and help nobody but them. The government should focus its energies on building better infrastructure, creation of jobs and set up colleges and universities.

Matters of concern
It is amusing to see most of the media blaming Sharad Pawar for his inability to control rising food prices (‘Centre, state unite to ensure onion prices fall by 50%’, DNA, December 23). People forget that agriculture ministry is only one of his responsibilities, a minor one that affects only India. But his responsibilities as the ICC chairman have ramifications for the entire world and even a slight misstep may leave an adverse and permanent impact on the world of cricket. For the sake of world cricket, let us not harp on irritants like rise in food prices. I appeal to Pawar to continue his great work with ICC and ignore petty critics. One can stay without food for a few days, but is it possible to stay without cricket?
