Cricket faux pas
This is to bring to light how ill-informed some of our celebrity former cricketers are at times (‘MI knocked out despite last-ball win’, DNA, September 20). Ravi Shastri, during the presentation ceremony in Durban, harped at least four times, that Mumbai Indians stood an outside chance to reach the semifinals. Even a schoolboy knew that Mumbai Indians were out of the competition. This is just for those who think that everything
uttered by a celebrity commentator is the last word in the game.

The Kashmir issue
This is with reference to ‘Krishna tells Pak to end J&K occupation’, (DNA, September 24). It is commendable that external affairs minister SM Krishna, who is in New York to attend the annual UN General Assembly meeting, has asked Pakistan to end its illegal
occupation of parts of J&K before advising New Delhi how to go about doing things in the state. A day earlier, Pakistan’s foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi demanded yet again that the US intervene in Kashmir, asserting that India’s “occupation cannot continue” and that “the rights of Kashmiri people cannot continue to be denied”. Now, India must be firm in demanding that Pakistan vacate the territory it has illegally occupied.

Improve infrastructure
Why a poor country like India, where millions of people have no place to stay or two square meals to eat should try to host a mega sport event and spend crores of tax payers’ money and make a mess of the whole thing, is not understood (‘Is it really worth hosting major sporting events?’ DNA, September 24). It is now clear that it was a way of making easy money by the politicians and their cronies. India should not even think of hosting any mega events at least for the next 50 years and instead put that money in
improving the infrastructure.

Man Vs nature
It was shocking to read about the brutal deaths of a herd of elephants by a speeding train in West Bengal (‘Tragedy on tracks: 7 elephants killed’, DNA, September 23). The irony of a nation worshipping an elephant God and remaining indifferent to the sufferings of real animals is disgusting. It is time we lay down strict rules against man’s insensitive intrusion into the natural habitats of wild animals.
