This is with reference to ‘Centre reaches out, but separatists stick to azaadi stand', (DNA, September 21). It was disturbing that the 39MP-delegation led by Union home minister P Chidambaram visiting Kashmir to understand the sensitive issues at ground zero was disregarded by the separatists.
Claims of azaadi
This is with reference to ‘Centre reaches out, but separatists stick to azaadi stand', (DNA, September 21). It was disturbing that the 39MP-delegation led by Union home minister P Chidambaram visiting Kashmir to understand the sensitive issues at ground zero was disregarded by the separatists. Chidambaram was right in urging the Kashmiris to align with India. It was matter of concern that none of the political parties attending the meet said J&K is an integral part of India when the demands for a separate Kashmir were made by the separatists.

Nothing to bequeath
It is heartening to know that Bill Gates, one of the richest men in the world, decided not to leave his fortune to his children (‘Gates won’t leave fortune for kids’, DNA, September 21). Contrast this with our politicians who amass wealth by unscrupulous means and make everyone in their extended families millionaires. This happens in an India that gave Arthashastra, a treatise on politics and governance that exhorts the ruler to live for their citizens. I wish our rich businessmen would at least emulate the example of Bill Gates and teach their children the dignity of working for one’s wealth.

Judicial corruption
This is with reference to ‘Rescuing the SC from public contempt’ (DNA, September 20). An eminent lawyer like Shanti Bhushan will not speak without having substantial evidence at his disposal. Since corruption in India has free licence, it is not improbable that it has entered the judiciary as well. One cannot deny that for a healthy democracy, all three pillars, viz the executive, legislature and judiciary are required to balance one another. Courts are supposed to be honest brokers of justice and if they fail in this main function by being overshadowed by corruption, it is the greatest danger to the people who have nothing else to fall back on, as far as justice is concerned. Much depends upon the chief justice of India as to how he reacts to the allegations and protects the reputation of the high office of justice. It is time dubious judges are brought to book to protect the fair name of the judiciary. —Prem K Menon, Mumbai
