The Supreme Court seems to be taking steps to regain lost public confidence in the judiciary.
Appointing judges
This is with reference to ‘Collegium invokes public interest’, seeks to shuffle HC judges’, (DNA, September 13). The SC seems to be taking steps to regain lost public confidence in the judiciary. The move should have been preceded by disclosure of names of practising lawyers on websites of respective high courts whose judges are likely to be transferred. The Law Commission has already recommended that judges should not have kin as practising lawyers in the same court. The Supreme Court and other courts should go a step further and devise a
system so that cases handled by lawyers don’t come before a judge who is the relative of the concerned lawyer. We also need drastic reforms on judges’ appointment. As judges are an interested party, they should not become part of the collegium deciding the appointments. The law ministry should devise a system under which litigants should judge the performance of judges on a scale of 1-10, and litigants’ views (analysis of judgements) should be given weightage in appointing judges.

Well done, Sushil
We are very proud that Sushil Kumar has won a gold medal in the World Wrestling Championship in Moscow in the 66kg freestyle category (‘Sushil is first Indian wrestler to win gold at Worlds’, DNA, September 13). He has given a new life to
Indian wrestling and with this performance he has added another glorious chapter to this Indian sport. He had made a similar attempt to win the championship last year but could not succeed. It is the greatest achievement by any Indian wrestler so far.

Travesty of truth
When the nation is being choked under the weight of widespread corruption, union law minister Veerappa Moily’s criticism of former chief vigilance commissioner Pratyush Sinha’s statement that one-third of the country’s population is corrupt, is infact the “travesty of truth” (‘Moily slams top officer for saying one-third of India is corrupt’, DNA, September 14). Moily says a few black sheep cannot reflect the culture of governance. Had it been only a few black sheep, Infosys chief Narayana Murthy would not have been so anguished about the corruption in the government sector and proposed the replacement of the IAS with Indian Management Service.
