Chaos-laden incidents have one thing in common: The lackadaisical approach to not do things on time.
Doctionary.com defines chaos as “A state of utter confusion or disorder; a total lack of organisation or order; (and) any confused, disorderly mass. Its synonyms are disarray, jumble, turmoil, tumult.”
Now, a look at the events over the past two weeks in Bangalore and New Delhi suggest they were nothing less than that — chaos.
The Commonwealth Games (CWG) preparations fiasco, collapse of the footbridge opposite Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main Games stadium, the stadium’s ceiling itself falling apart, the Games Village being flooded with filth in most of its parts (now cleaned up), a multi-tonne slab of the Metro Rail’s elevated portion falling from a height of 50 feet in Bangalore’s Tumkur Road, two tigers dying of severe salmonella and E coli infection even as 10 others suffered from bacterial infection at Bannerghatta Biological Park, and the Friday flooding in Bangalore that shocked the denizens of the city out of their minds — all featuring utter chaos and lack of repentance.
These incidents come up for mention because they are the latest in an unending line of a series of chaotic events in our country.
For instance, the Metro slab falling is the 13th Metro mishap in Bangalore alone. Miraculously nobody died, but it could have easily turned into one of the worst disasters Bangalore has ever seen. Since there were no deaths, the incident remains minimised in the media’s eyes. But when deaths do occur, and they surely will with the callous attitude of those in charge, questions will be raised over.
The same applies to the Friday flooding of several parts of Bangalore due to a cloudburst. Again, no deaths, no Abhisheks falling into the drains, thus the heavy rain and its impact will be relegated to the backburner until another one comes by threateningly — and soon, as the Met office has warned.
All these chaos-laden incidents have one thing in common: The lackadaisical approach to not do things on time and ascertain that adverse impact on the society is minimised, if not completely eliminated.
This does not mean you put up a footbridge in quick time to beat deadlines, raise your hand to shout “done,” and then look over your shoulders to see it collapse.
That’s our Indian approach, it appears — don’t listen and do things haphazardly, or listen and don’t do anything at all.
In Bangalore, civic bodies did not budge an inch despite the Met office issuing an advance warning about heavy rain on Friday evening.
There’s one more thing that’s typically Indian — comparing ourselves with the West, and especially now, with China, which does things far better, safer and faster than India.
But there is a typical Indian way of comparing — we see what mistakes they have committed and hold them as excuses to justify ours.
There must be an Indian style of doing things the right way, too. Why not begin by following Austrian philosopher, Otto Weininger’s quote: “All genius is a conquering of chaos and mystery.”
