ANALYSIS
Depending on the mother and sister he grew up with, or the woman he has as his wife, practically every man has his own take on womankind. Some views are compassionate and humane, others (surprisingly) less so about a sex that is more than one-half responsible for the continuance of the human race. And though it is difficult to pin-point which came first, it has largely been observed that societies which accord sufficient respect to their womenfolk are seemingly more progressive and advanced the world over than those which do not.
Yet, the relentless march of the 21st century cannot proceed without acknowledging the indispensable contributions of women to our societies — whether it is just in procreation, or in raising emotionally well-adjusted adults or even just in keeping the world in a balance — especially when their other halves are known to be prone to war-mongering and delusions of power and grandeur. The role women play as nurturers of life and the repositories of protecting life — all life for that matter — is simply too great to be overlooked. As Buddhist philosopher Daisaku Ikeda puts it, women are natural peacemakers. “With their focus on human relationships and their engagement in the work of raising children and protecting family life, they develop a deep sense of empathy that cuts through to underlying human realities.”
Which is not to say that they are any less valuable in environments that are geared towards competitiveness, such as the work front is. As more and more awakened men are experiencing, the reality of a callous and sometimes inhumane work situation can be considerably mitigated by having female workers and bosses around to lighten the atmosphere and bring another altogether different dimension of consideration, care and synchronicity to the proceedings.
Women also seemed to be better geared to work in team situations where they are natural adepts at combining the talents of different individuals to produce a relatively harmonious as well as seamless result. Besides which other boss, apart from a female one, would ever think of taking you to a fine-dine place to celebrate the completion of a project, and with all affection show you photographs of her family and children besides memorising the names of your family members as well — all in the same evening?
While men can be greatly dynamic and aggressive, the energy that a woman naturally exudes is more holistic and inclusive. It has also been documented that while men find it difficult to multi-task, women do so easily. This makes the life skills of the two sexes complementary to each other, and since that is the case, how then is it possible to hold one sex up over the other? They are equals, in every sense of the word — except perhaps that while men are physically stronger, women are by and large vastly stronger in terms of their emotional strength, their abilities to deal humanely with a crisis and their abilities to take into account the other concerned party in any human relationship.
Men are comparative retards in the latter aspect which is the reason that we have had to endure centuries of war and bloodshed and untold misery to the human race — and even today countries war against each other without seeming to understand too much the point of dialogue and mutual reconciliation.
I have a simple proposal. Let’s start by giving the women in our immediate environments a whole lot more respect. And let the mothers of the world decide the fate of the human race, as ‘soft power’ leaders, instead of the usual ‘hard-core’ males. Then I would say, we would have a lot more peace in our lives and all around us as well.
