Why are we not suppose to extinguish a candle by blowing with our mouth? All of us learn this as children and do not know the reason behind it. Can you please explain?—Bianca, Frankfurt Germany

The traditional name for people in the Indian subcontinent is Bharatiya, i.e. those who adore the light. Light, whether of the candle or the ghee or oil lamp, represents the fire element and reflects the energy of the sun. Thus, a candlelight dinner, or eating in the presence of a flame, is a common practice even in Europe. Perhaps because the sun has set and so has our digestive fire. It is important that the candle is made from pure beeswax for positive effects. There is a custom all over the world to always burn a lamp with oil or ghee in a temple or candles in the church. These lights are usually never extinguished but allowed to burn until the burning medium is consumed. When candles are lit at home and need to be extinguished, the best method is to use a metal candle extinguisher. Alternatively, use a wooden stick to dip the wick in wax or oil to put off the flame without any smoke and then straighten it again for use next time. When we blow out a candle, we exhale with force and then automatically inhale the harmful smoke released from the around the flame containing carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Thus, it is for our own protection that it is advised not to blow out a candle.

I am a 31-year-old man suffering from indigestion for the last four years. There is an immediate urge for the motion after any meal. I have also developed ulcers two years ago. Please suggest a remedy. —Rajendra

The imbalance of the pitta and vata doshas, especially of the digestive system, can lead to the development of such a problem. To increase the strength of the digestive system, take a mixture of half a tablespoon of lemon juice, five-six drops of ginger juice, a little cumin powder and black salt before food for about 10 days. Include fresh homemade butter and stone sugar in your food daily. Add cooling gulkand or rose jam, amla jam, in your diet. Soak 8-10 manuka or black raisins overnight in water, in the morning crush the raisins in the water, filter and drink. Take a teaspoon of avipattikar or sancool powder before sleeping at night. Take two tablets of Kamadudha twice daily. Apply rose beauty oil on the stomach and abdomen daily for relief. All these will increase the strength of the digestive system and decrease the overall problem you face. In spite of all this, if the problem persists, it is necessary to consult an Ayurvedic physician.

Since five to six months, I am suffering from mucus in stools once a week. This trouble intensified since last year when I was travelling and consumed impure water. Nowadays, I always boil the water before drinking. Please give some more tips to get relief from the problem.—Suresh

You need to build up the strength of the digestive system ans strengthen your immunity so that infections can be kept at bay. Drinking boiled water is the first step towards achieving this aim. It’s good that you have already started this habit. Another easy home remedy would be to make a mixture of dry ginger powder, fennel and khus khus (opium seeds) in equal proportions, roasted in ghee along with stone sugar. Take one teaspoon of this before meals with warm water. According to Ayurveda drinking homemade buttermilk after lunch with a pinch of cumin powder in it is very good for digestion and is also a natural probiotic. If you take a little hingvashtak churna with 2-3 drops of ghee with the first couple of bites of rice when you begin your meal will be surely helpful. If all this does not normalize the situation, then one needs to take medicines like kutajavleha, bilwasan, etc after consulting an Ayurvedic physician.
