Zari unit raid: Cops to look for rescued kids’ parents

Police officials plan to trace the parents of 16 children who were rescued from a zari unit in Rakhial. The children, who were rescued with the help of an NGO, belonged to Bihar and were brought to city to work in the unit. They were made to work for over 12 hours for a meagre pay of Rs100 per week.
"Once we manage to get in touch with the parents of the rescued children, we will have a better picture of how these children landed here. We need to see if they were promised something else before being brought here," said AB Saiyad, inspector of Rakhial police station. The rescued children in the age group of 9 to 15 years had been working in the unit for some three years.
Mohammed Sheikh, the owner of the unit where these children worked, was later produced in court.
Poornima Gupta, assistant director, Childline Ahmedabad Action Study Group, said they have already started the process to trace the parents of the children. "But the time taken to trace them depends on how clearly the children remember their addresses."
