The dispute between Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and trustees of VS Hospital and Chinai Prasuti Gruh has finally reached the Gujarat High Court.
Acting on a petition filed by the hospital's board members—Brijesh Chinai and Rupa Chinai, a single judge bench of the court on Tuesday issued a notice to the charity commissioner along with the civic authorities seeking their response in the matter by December 27. Notably, the duo has moved court against the order of the charity commissioner directing the contending parties to resolve their dispute amicably.
As per the case details, the Sheth Vadilal Sarabhai Trust and Chinai Trust run the VS Hospital and the family members of Sheth Vadilal Sarabhai and Sheth Chinai are part of the board of trustees of the hospital since 1961.
In 2012, AMC decided to come up with a multi-speciality hospital of 1,600 beds on the land behind the two hospitals, and parking was proposed at the site of the two hospitals, without taking any consent from the petitioners. It was then decided that the 1,155 beds from the two hospitals along with the necessary equipment will be shifted to the new hospital for which the Medical Education Trust (MET) was formed. The petitioners have contended that the entire purpose of forming the new trust was to divest them from the management of the two hospitals and enable AMC councillors, bureaucrats, and politicians, who are trustees of the MET to take complete control.
The petitioners moved the charity commissioner against such moves which allegedly gave "vague directions" in contravention of established norms against which the petitioners have moved high court.
