After the US scaled down its presence at the ninth edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit (VGS), now, the UK has also stepped away from the list of partner countries at the event. The state government did not get the final confirmation from the UK and they ultimately conveyed that they would not take part in the event as a partner country.

The chief secretary Dr JN Singh, confirming the development, said, "The UK is not joining us in the event as a partner country as no confirmation arrived from their side." Earlier, he had also confirmed the development on the US and had said exclusively to DNA that the country would not be present at the event as a partner country.

A senior official in the state government said, on condition of anonymity, "The United Kingdom was approached a couple of times by both the External Affairs Ministry of the Government of India and the Gujarat government separately for their confirmation, but their response was in negative. This could be because of the impending financial crisis after Brexit. However, we have not been informed about the reason for their refusal to become a partner country in the VGS again."

Meanwhile, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Thailand, the UAE and Uzbekistan will be partner countries at VGS this time, as mentioned on the official website of the event managed by the state government.

Besides these countries, Australia and Poland also recently confirmed that they would be partner countries in the event.

The chief secretary said, "We have got the confirmation from Australia and Poland and they have conveyed the message to the government for becoming a partner country in the event."

The government is still trying to rope in more countries especially from Africa.

"Just like the US, no political entity from the UK will take part in VGS this time, but their officers on a mission such as ambassadors or consulates and business delegations are expected to attend the event. We do not see any impact on investments coming into Gujarat from the countries which are scaling down their presence from the event as partner countries," sources in the government said.
