A statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was found defiled in a village on the outskirts of Gandhinagar district on Wednesday.

Police said that a 25-year-old statue of Sardar Patel in Shertha village of Gandhinagar was garlanded with empty cold drink bottles and grass by some unidentified persons some time during last night. The incident came to light in the morning after some local residents spotted the garland on the statue, and informed Adalaj police station.

Pictures and videos of the defiled statue soon went viral. The garland and grass were removed from the statue by the residents later.

Adalaj Police said that they have started investigations into the incident, and are looking at the CCTV footage from the area to identify the persons involved. Police added that cops have been deployed near the statue as a precaution.
