If a fellow inmate of Tulsiram Prajapati — Sharafat Ali alias Kalu and a resident of Udaipur — is to be believed, both Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Prajapati used to work for suspended IPS officer Abhay Chudasama.
Despite being suspicious of this fact, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has failed to prove it. But the CBI has included Ali’s statement, along with other startling revelations, in the charge sheet submitted to a Mumbai court recently.
According to Ali’s statement, both Tulsi and Sohrab were working for Chudasama and had been responsible for completing the assignments given by him. Ali had mentioned this in his statement recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). And, according to law, any statement made under this section cannot be retracted. Ali was arrested under the Arms Act and lodged in Udaipur jail, where he met Tulsi.
Ali had also mentioned in his statement that Tulsi, during his last few meetings, used to regularly interact with him. According to the statement, Tulsi was nabbed by Chudasama in Gujarat, who then expressed his unhappiness over the excessive ‘activities’ of Sohrab and Tulsi.
Tulsi, according to the statement given to Chudasama, had said: “Sir, what wrong have we done? We are just working under your instructions.”
According to the statement, Chudasama later on convinced Tulsi into giving him Sohrab’s location. The IPS officer promised Tulsi that he would arrest Sohrab in some minor cases and then let him go. Tulsi agreed and helped the Gujarat Police nab Sohrab, who was then eliminated in a fake encounter. Again, in a statement given by another history sheeter from Udaipur — Mushtaq Ahmed, 55, a resident of Udaipur — the CBI had recorded that Sohrab met him in Sabarmati Jail and told him that he (Sohrab) was in contact with many senior officers of the Gujarat Police.
The CBI, since the arrest of Chudasama in the Sohrab fake encounter case, was hunting for witnesses that could nail Chudasama and have recorded the statements of these two people who knew both the deceased — Sohrab and Tulsi. Chudasama was arrested by the CBI in April 2010 and recorded these statements following his arrest. Sohrab and Tulsi were both killed in fake encounters in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
