Saurashtra University, which is over fifty-year-old, will now promote thoughts of Swami Dayanand Saraswati who had founded Arya Samaj. The university has been selected by the University Grants Commission (UGC), as one of the universities, to establish Swami Dayanand Saraswati Chair for research. In an attempt to establish chairs on several eminent personalities, the UGC had invited proposals from universities across the country.

Of the 18 proposals that UGC received to set up Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Chair, nearly 8 proposals were received to set up Swami Dayanand Saraswati Chair. Four universities have been granted a nod to set up Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay chair, three including Saurashtra University has been selected to establish Swami Dayanand Saraswati chair.

Speaking about the same, Pratapsinh Chauhan, Vice-chancellor, Saurashtra university said, "The UGC wanted to set up Chairs on individuals from the 18th century. The UGC has selected us and provided 85 lakhs as an initial fund to promote his contribution to the society. Maharishi Swami Dayanand Sarawasti has done a lot of work by bringing Arya Samaj and Sanathan Dharma to us. He was born in Tankara which is very close to our university and hence we thought to promote his contribution through research."

The committee relied on the following parameters for evaluating the merit of the university for awarding the UGC chairs and they included physical infrastructure, academic resources, soundness of the proposal, proposed activities plan, evidence of the work and research on Swami Dayanand Saraswati, NAAC ranking, etc. The committee further recommended that the Swami Dayanand Saraswati chair be redesignated as Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati chair.

The prefix Maharishi before Dayanand ji is universally employed.

The committee also considered the references received from the Ministry of HRD for the establishment of chairs in the names of Vardhman Mahavir Ji on Jain studies and Dr Verghese Kurien for rural development and the cooperative movement.
