The government spent the huge sum on a series of feasibility reports that have been conducted, are still under way,  or will be done for the project. This project was conceptulised by Narendra Modi, then the chief minister of the state, with a vision to obstruct saline waters of the Arabian Sea through a barrage and collect fresh Narmada water in the same.

The project also included the bridge over the gulf of Khambhat in the sea.

The issue came to light through a questionnaire that the state government tabled in Gujarat assembly on Thursday.

The question was asked by Congress MLA from Jamalpur Imran Khedawala seeking the details on expense incurred by the government over the project and the status of the progress.

The deputy chief minister and minister for Narmada department, Nitin Patel, replied that a total of Rs 113.52 crore has been spent on the project so far.

The government would construct the dam at Kalpasar and the barrage over River Narmada near Bhadbhut village of Bharuch district, Patel replied. He said that 21 pre-feasibility studies on the dam project were completed, 10 such studies were underway and 19 others were being planned.

Patel also informed the Congress MLA that the government planned to start construction of the barrage in the current year itself.
