It will be a tribute to Vikram Sarabhai in the true sense from 130 crore Indians when the Vikram Lander will enable the touchdown of Pragyan Rover on the Moon as part of the Chandrayaan-2 mission, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was speaking via video-conference during the centenary celebration of the father of India's space programme on Monday.

PM Modi said that after the untimely death of Homi Bhabha, Sarabhai did not let anyone feel the vacuum created in the world of Indian science. He urged the youth to take inspiration from Sarabhai. The event in the city saw several eminent personalities and space scientists in attendance.

K Kasturirangan, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, said ISRO had achieved what Sarabhai had envisaged. "Had he been alive, he would have thought what next? And must have suggested that we now have the capability to reach other planets. ISRO is already doing that and this is a fitting tribute to the great visionary," said Kasturirangan.

Recalling Sarabhai's vision for India's technological needs, his son Kartikeya said his father had said that India needed investment to develop technologies of internal combustion engine and electric traction engine. "He thought that India had very few motor vehicles compared to its population, so these technologies should be developed. It is now that we are looking at them," said Kartikeya Sarabhai.

Other dignitaries recalled Sarabhai's contribution in setting up many top Institutions. Sarabhai had set up the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad Textile and Industrial Research Association, ISRO, and Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad.

Errol D'souza, director of IIM-A, said the management institute is a classic example of public-private partnership, a concept in vogue nowadays. IIM-A is a joint creation of the Centre, Vikram Sarabhai and Arvind Lalbhai. D'souza attributed IIM-A's reputation to the model of studies selected by Sarabhai. "He knew the role experience plays in management and decided to bring practical experience into the classroom, for which the Case Study Method of Harvard Business School is more suitable and adapted in IIM-A. In (B-schools) of Harvard, Cornell and Chicago, there are many professors who have worked at IIM-A and they give credit to the system selected by Sarabhai."
Pramod Kale, former director of Space Application Centre and a close associate of Sarabhai, said the great space scientist had then understood the importance a television set could play in the education of the masses rather than being a device for entertainment.
