The sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned former commissioner of police and retired IPS officer KR Kaushik in connection with the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case on Saturday.Interestingly, the CBI is also interrogating suspended IPS officer DG Vanzara for the same case in the same office. Kaushik was questioned for a few hours, mainly in connection with the intelligence input by the central Intelligence Bureau that was routed through him to Vanzara.Kaushik was posted as commissioner of police, Ahmedabad, during June 2004 when Vanzara was deputy commissioner of police, Detection of Crime Branch. However, this is the first time that Kaushik is being questioned by CBI in any encounter case.  Surprisingly, the CBI had not got details of any calls between Kaushik and Vanzara from June 10, 2004 to June 15, 2004 – the period when Ishrat was allegedly kidnapped and later killed by DCB sleuths. Vanzara’s CDR hints at bigger names  The CBI, after scrutinising the call details of Vanzara, had found that he was in contact with former junior home minister Amit Shah, IPS officers GL Singhal and PP Pandey and IB official Rajendra Kumar, posted in Gujarat in 2004.  CBI had found that Vanzara and Kumar had talked around 37 times in this period. The investigating agency had found that Vanzara was in constant touch with Kumar which, according to sources, is unusual as there is no need for an IB official to remain in constant touch with a DCP-level officer.
