Farmers of nearly twenty-four odd villages of Chanasma taluka in Patan district, have complained to government authorities that their crops will be destroyed if canal water is not provided to them. They are a part of the command area of the Sardar Sarovar Dam and are entitled to receive water from the canal. The farmers have threatened that if authorities do not intervene in time, they will be forced to draw water on their own.

Chandu Patel, former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in Chanasma, and a leading farmer in the region said the area falls within the command area and have been receiving water from the canal for the past five years. This year also they were given the first round of irrigation water for winter crops. However, the subsequent rounds of irrigation water have been denied to them.

"What is the use of storing water, if crops are not saved? We have met all the conditions for receiving water. We have formed all the committees and have made necessary payments. We got the initial round of irrigation water. If there was not enough water, why did the authorities provide water in the first round. Farmers sowed seeds hoping that water will be available throughout the season," said Patel.

"The government said that water storage is 25 per cent lower. Just about half of the canal network has been laid. So, there should be enough water wherever canals have been laid. It seems the government wants to give water to industries and deprive farmers," Patel alleged.

Sagar Rabari, founder and president of Gujarat Khedut Ekta Manch, said that farmers of 22 villages will gather at a local pumping station at Khorsam and will draw water from it to save their crops.
