No surprise this: Sr VP & VP of GCCI elected uncontested

As expected, senior vice-president, vice-president and corporate members were elected uncontested in elections to the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI).

If no consensus is arrived at, there will be elections to three categories — business association, general and patron/life members — for getting berth on the executive committee of the apex body of trade and commerce in the state.
Since the chamber’s senior VP becomes ex-officio president according to the constitution, Shanker Patel will become the new GCCI president on July 5.

Meanwhile, only one form each was received for post of senior VP and VP. As a result, chairman and managing director of Gujarat State Export Corporation Ltd (GECL) Rakesh Shah and Planet Health’s Rohit Patel got elected unanimously as senior VP and president, respectively.

Moreover, Naroda Enviro Pvt Ltd chairman Shailesh Patwari, Gulmahor Greens chairman Trilok Parikh and Metrochem managing director Gautam Jain secured berths on the GCCI executive committee in the corporate member category uncontested as no other nomination was filed in that category.

There will not be any election for the business association category. Nilesh Shah of the Baroda Chamber of Commerce and Industries and Bipin Mehta from the Saurashtra Chamber of Commerce and Industry were elected uncontested in this category.

Election to the general category, however, seems inevitable as 24 nominations have been filed for 12 posts. Some members of the GCCI’s executive committee wanted to keep the posts of vice-president or president reserved for traders’ associations known as Mahajan. But, their demand was turned down.

It is also believed that the traders’ associations have got four-five members to file nominations for the general category. Now, they are not likely to withdraw their nominations. So, elections seem inevitable.
