There is a need to develop space law in order to correspond to the contemporary challenges, said former ISRO chief AS Kiran Kumar. Kumar was speaking at the inauguration of the third edition of Gujarat National Law University's (GNLU) Air and Space Law Academy.

Explaining how satellite constellations are changing the landscape of mapping of earth that too with the involvement of private players, he said, "Space treaties fail to cater to the present realities of human space endeavours. And hence there is a need to develop space law in order to correspond to the contemporary challenges. There is an increasing involvement of private players and hence the need of regulation is urgent."

The week-long academy has been organised in collaboration with the Institute of Air and Space Law, University of Cologne, Germany. At the inauguration, present was Air Marshal RK Dhir, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Dr Stephan Hobe, Director of the Institute of Air and Space Law, University of Cologne, Germany along with Kumar.

Air Marshal Dhir referred to the role played by aviation in providing global connectivity to people in general. He emphasized that militarisation of space is bound to happen since a nation will always put its security concern as topmost priority. Emphasizing upon national security, he said that there is a need for the policy to be framed from an aviator's perspective.

Warning against the emerging trend of movement towards unilateralism defying international consensus regarding space exploitation, Dr Hobe emphasised upon the competition issues faced in the aviation industry at the international level. He further expressed concerns about the legal issues confronted regarding MH17.

The academy aims to acquaint participants with various aspects relating to safety and security of aviation and space activities. It will further create awareness amongst participants about recent trends in civil aviation and the militarization and commercialization of outer space, enable participants to understand various dispute redressal mechanisms in Air and Space Law and their efficacy.
