The Congress took a dig at chief minister Narendra Modi and his government on various issues like crop insurance, insufficient power and fake encounters at a farmers’ gathering in Rajkot on Friday.

The opposition party launched a scathing attack on the Gujarat CM on the very day Modi was anointed the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in Delhi. Gurudas Kamat, AICC general secretary and also in charge of the party in Gujarat, went to the extent of calling Modi a demon and even described the riots of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh another Godhra Kand.

Organising a farmers’ gathering in Saurashtra was believed to a challenge for the Congress as its farmer leader Vitthal Radadiya had switched his loyalty to BJP, the ruling party in the state. The Congress claimed that over 50,000 farmers attended the function in Rajkot.

The AICC general secretary called Modi a demon and said that riots in Muzaffarnagar were a copy of the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002. “Modi should have sent someone from here to Muzaffarnagar for his ambition of marching to Delhi,” said Kamat, adding that he has divided his party and now he would divide the nation.

The Gujarat Congress leaders criticised the state government for not providing correct data of sowing in the state which resulted in the farmers suffering huge financial losses.

Describing the BJP government for being anti-farmer, GPCC president Arjun Modhwadia said number of suicides by farmers in the state has crossed 7,000. He went on to add that state government was blaming the Centre despite the Government of India releasing Rs700 crore towards payment of crop insurance which was lying with the state government.
