Arguments and counter-arguments flew thick and fast at the Model United Nations organised by the HL College of Commerce.

“It is extremely unrealistic to expect that some countries would rely on nuclear weapons while others would not try to acquire them. If we are not allowing a nuclear bracket, then there is bound to be a proliferation of nuclear weapons. There is no other option. So, it is good to have a nuclear bracket,” argued a student.

“Formation of the nuclear bracket has not made countries proliferate nuclear arsenal. It simply means that the size of the nuclear arsenal in the world remained the same while there is more security and it might not necessarily increase violence,” said another student.

These were some of the arguments offered at a small conference room where delegates from different countries argued for and against nuclear disarmament. The debate was part of the Model United Nations — academic simulations that aim to educate participants about current events and international issues and UN Agenda.

The two-day event, which began on Monday, will see a discussion on nuclear disarmament, crisis in Syria and Egypt and Green Technology Intellectual Property Rights.

The event was inaugurated by IPS officer Atul Karwal and Ahmedabad University registrar BM Shah graced the occasion.

Jyoti Karunakaran, one of the students and a member of the organising body, said students from around 10 colleges and two schools took part in the discussion.

“In the Model United Nations, students represent different countries. Different committees are formed to discuss different issues. If a student happens to represent Argentina or Russia, he or she has to study the country’s take on the issues concerned.

The research helps students understand various issues, financial conditions, social aspects of presenting the argument in favour or against the motion,” said Karunakaran.

HLCC principal Mona Kelshikar said the debate would expose students to a host of issues.
