The worst is over and it's time to move ahead for welfare of all, said leaders, addressing the north Indian community settled in Gujarat. One of them agreed that close to 70,000 workers have fled the state out of fear. However, intense efforts to assure their safety has managed to change some minds who have dropped their idea of leaving the state. Police and industry persons from Naroda industrial estate held a joint programme for the same and assured them of their safety.

Uttar Bharatiya Vikas Parishad (UBVP), a body of north Indians settled in various states, organised a programme in Vatva to assure safety to migrant workers in the region.

"People were threatened and they fled fearing for their life. We should consider the episode as a bad dream. We want to assure them that Gujarat has been safe for migrants and will continue to be so. We want to spread the message of peace and brotherhood. It is in the interest of everyone that workers stay here," said Shyamsinh Thakur, president of Uttar Bharatiya Vikas Parishad (UBVP) in Gujarat.

Naroda Industries Association (NIA) and Ahmedabad city police also organised a public meeting on Wednesday where workers were assured of their safety. The workers also said that while there were cases of sporadic violence in some parts of the state, there were none in either their places of work or places of residence. NIA has close to 1,300 industries employing close to 70,000 workers, of which migrant workers constitute a lion's share at around 50,000.

We have been conducting patrols and flag-marches to prevent any untoward incident. The industries are also making arrangements for food and stay for workers who may need to be assured of their safety. If you feel threatened, approach the police without any hesitation.

Not even one per cent of workers have fled from Naroda. There are close to 50,000 workers from outside Gujarat. We assure them all the safety. They are very hardworking and employed on merits. In their absence, productivity will reduce by 80 per cent.

I have been working here for about 10 years now. I am absolutely safe and there is no need to panic. I stay here with my family. Even they have not faced any threats. But relatives back in UP are concerned when the watch such news or read about them. I have reassured them that there is no cause of worry.
