Man pays with life for protecting wife's modesty

A man was arrested on Thursday for murdering his friend and his two children after the deceased tried to stop him from raping his wife.

According to police, Ramesh Thakore and his children, five-year-old Rohit and three-year-old Tejas, were murdered with a scythe by family friend Bachu Jina Sipahi, an agricultural labourer.

As Thakore and Sipahi had been friends for long, the latter used to frequent the place of the deceased for lunch or dinner. However, this friendship turned ugly on Thursday leading to a triple murder.

“Last night (Thursday) Sipahi was at Thakore’s home for dinner. After the meal, dinner, Sipahi decided to stay back while Thakore, his wife Lakshmi and their children went to bed. Around midnight, when the accused tried to rape Lakshmi, it led to a scuffle between Thakore and Sipahi,” said sub-inspector B P Prajapati.

“Following the incident, Sipahi ran away only to return with a scythe. He then lunged at Thakore and his kids, who died on the spot,” he added.

Sipahi was nabbed by the locals when trying to flee. He was then handed over to the police, who have registered a case of attempted rape and murder against him.

Lakshmi is now the only witness in the case and based on her statement, complaints have been registered against Sipahi, who had earlier, too, faced murder charges in Surendranagar but was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
