The concerns about malnutrition in Gujarat despite the state’s apparent development propaganda may after all not be completely misplaced. Additional chief secretary of state’s labour and employment department, P Panneervel, brought these concerns to the fore on Thursday during a visit to Saraspur Gujarati School No 13-14 and anganwadi as part of Kanya Kelvani Rathyatra and Shala Praveshotsav. The bureaucrat said malnutrition is one of the reasons why sex ratio dips by 20 per thousand on a scale of 100 after the child is born – especially among girls.
The overall sex ratio is 909 while the sex ratio at age of 0-6 is 890. Panneervel said, “One of the reasons is lack of proper nutrition among girls,” while talking to the school officials. He added that the situation of malnutrition among girls has improved in tribal areas but is still a cause of concern in urban areas mainly due to eating habits.
As per the census 2011 data, the sex ratio in Gujarat stands at 919, while in rural areas, it is 949 and in urban areas it is 880. The data also shows that overall child sex ratio in Gujarat stands at 890, while in urban areas, it is 852 and in rural areas it is 914. Panneervel checked health cards of students coming to anganwadi located at Shangar Sheri in Saraspur.
He found that many girls were malnourished and some were even seriously malnourished, while boys were found to be quite healthy. He asked the teachers to take care about girl students getting proper nutrition. “This is the reason why we have Kanya Kelvani Rathyatra and we come here,” said the apparently concerned bureaucrat.
He further urged teachers to create awareness about well-being of the girl child among parents and not to discriminate between boys and girls.
He also asked the principal of the school to give a speech on the subject during school management committee meeting. He observed that though the number of girls is higher in the school, they also leave studies in between and drew special attention of the principal to this issue.
