Now joggers near Prahladnagar garden will also pick up trash on the road and deposit them at places designated by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on May 26. Organisers say the initiative, to promote use of dustbins, will serve dual purpose as joggers will also have an extra physical exercise and it will also help make the area free of garbage.

The run will be flagged off at about 6:15 am from Westgate along SG Highway reach Prahladnagar garden, Anandnagar and then return on the same route. “The fact that there is trash and garbage on the certain sections of the road reveals that people are not still habituated to use dust bins. AMC has placed dustbins for dry and wet waste at every 200 metres or so. We want citizens to use them rather than throw trash on the road,” said Vishal Khanama (I/C) deputy municipal commissioner of South West Zone of AMC.

He informed that people, especially youngsters hang out till late night along the stretch on this route and leave the cups and plates there. “It is because the AMC staff clean the area that it appears to be clean. We want people to cultivate the habit of properly disposing their own trash,” he told media persons.

Voluntary organisation 42.1.com is organising the event. Such Plogging (jogging and plugging) have been held in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai. It is for the first time that it is being organised in the city.

Organisers said that the response in other cities has been encouraging and people have cultivated the habit of properly disposing their trash.

“Those who will pick up the garbage and put it in the bin, will never dispose the waste on road. We want to also discourage use of plastics,” said a member of the organization. Khanama said that registration is free and participants will also be given gloves and a goody-bag for picking up the garbage.
